Even though I’m a perpetual dreamer

My dreams are not

Of fairytales or happily ever afters

They are of sliding doors

And alternate endings

Things I wish I had said

And things I wish I had done

And things that can’t be undone

When paths have forked

I have blindly walked

Along the path that looks most appealing

Without reading the signs

Or thinking through the consequences

I wonder

What would have become of me

If I had walked a different path

And followed the red brick road

Instead of the yellow

Then I click my ruby red shoes

Once, twice, thrice

And I return to today

To where I am

To who I am

To why I am

Then I realise

It’s not too bad after all

And maybe

The yellow brick road

Led me to somewhere over the rainbow

Where all of my dreams come true.
